All you wanted to know about tennis, but didn't know who to ask.

Welcome to Free Tennis Lessons

Why Free Tennis Lessons?

Because the $50 to $150 / hour private lessons rates scare some people from taking up the game. FreeTennis Lessons lets you find out if you'll enjoy the game without taking out a 2nd mortgage.

Who is Bob Ray?

There is a mixture of good and bad information on the internet. That is why you should know who I am before you invest time and energy in my advice. Even though this advice is free, your time is valuable.

Why should you listen to me? I was a Professional Level1 member of United States Professional Tennis Association for 27 years. Yes, I know that you can find a Certified Professional almost everywhere. But few have the experience as an instructor, merchandiser, competitor and parent for most of the 69 years that I've been on the Planet.

I  played number 1 on my undefeated college (SDSU) tennis team and went out on the circuit in 1964 after graduation. And after making the finals of the Northwest Championships in Tacoma, I was making enough expense money to keep playing the circuit. That's when the draft board notified me to join the Army.

I actually joined the Navy as an Engineering Officer and spent most of my Service time in and around Vietnam.

By  discharge time in 1968 I was married with child and too old to regain international circuit playing level.

In 1969 I became Head Professional at the 25 court Morley Field Tennis Center in San Diego. During  the 10 years  there I was able to work closely with four famous tennis coaches, Robert Landsdorp, Bill Bond, Skip Redondo and Ed Collins. During my teaching career I have taught two National Junior Champions, Randy Thomas (12 & 14s) and Peter Herrman(12 & 14s), National Women's Doubles Champion, Pam Farmer and Australian Men's Open Champion, Brian Teacher.

In the 80s I devoted my time to Ray's Tennis and coaching my two kids, Sophia and Roger.

They both experienced injuries that prevented them from reaching their potential. But they were able to use their tennis and grades to get into top universities: University of Pennsylvania for Sophia and UCLA for Roger.

What's in it for me?

My wife, Hiroko, my son , Roger, and I run one of the largest tennis shops in the US. Between us we have over 100 years of tennis retail, instruction and tournament experience. If we can get more people enjoying the game it is better for them, us and tennis.
